Clay’s big night not enough as SEMO hangs 92-75 loss on Tennessee State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Graduate student Jr. Clay finished with a game-high 26 points and 14 assists, but the Tennessee State men’s basketball team fell 92-75 to the SEMO Redhawks on Thursday evening at the Show Me Center. 

The Tigers (11-11, 3-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Jr. Clay, who put together a double-double with 26 points and 14 assists. Dedric Boyd tacked on 13 points and Zool Kuethchipped in as well with 10 points and six rebounds from the bench.

Clay tied the TSU single-game assist mark with 14. He has tied the record with former Neil Jones, who set the record at Morehead State on Feb. 9, 1993.

The Tennessee State offense was very productive from three-point land, pouring in 10 threes on 24 attempts. Clay was the most prolific shooter for the Tigers, draining four treys in the contest.

Tennessee State did a great job disrupting Southeast Missouri State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. David Acosta led the way individually for the Tigers with two rejections.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 6-1 advantage, Tennessee State went on an 11-0 run with 18:01 left in the first half to increase its lead to 17-1. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 44-43 advantage. Tennessee State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 44 points.

Southeast Missouri State then erased the Tennessee State lead in the game’s final quarter for a 92-75 comeback victory. Tennessee State took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 31 points in the lane.
